Microsoft’s road to To B is gone forever.
On March 2, 2019, Microsoft announced on its Microsoft Band Support page that it would close its Microsoft Health Dashboard website on May 31, 2019. Meanwhile, Microsoft would remove Microsoft Band applications currently existing in Microsoft Store, Google Play and Apple App Store.
This means that Microsoft has officially declared the end of all Microsoft Band related services.
A Short-lived Microsoft and Hardware Product
In Microsoft’s initial positioning, Microsoft Band is a device integrated with health functions. It has 10 sensors, such as optical heart rate detector, triaxial accelerator, GPS, skin temperature detector, etc. It also has alarm, calendar, short message, telephone and other functions.
On the other hand, Microsoft has also developed an APP named Microsoft Health, which can be accessed simultaneously in Windows Phone 8.1, Android 4.3+, iOS 7.1+ and other mobile operating systems. This APP can be connected to Microsoft Band through Bluetooth, and can be seen on the mobile app after user health data is uploaded.
Microsoft Band is not a product without shortcomings, but it has been accidentally welcomed. Initially, the $199 product was sold only at Microsoft Store online stores, but on the first day it was snapped up; it remained out of stock throughout the 2014 holiday shopping season. Later, in March 2015, the production capacity of the product kept up, and later expanded to Amazon, Best Buy and other channels – and its market expanded to the UK.
On October 6, 2015, Microsoft released Microsoft Band 2 for $250, which was sold directly in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, and later extended to Australia. Compared with the first generation products, Microsoft Band 2 is more functional, but still not perfect.
However, Microsoft Band 2 did not wait for its successor. By October 2016, Microsoft’s online store had deleted the existence of Microsoft Band 2, while Best Buy was closed down, and Amazon was cleaning up its inventory. Although Microsoft had previously issued a statement saying that it would “stick to customer support and exploration of wearable devices”, Microsoft had actually deleted Microsoft Band’s software development suite at that time; moreover, according to foreign media reports, Microsoft no longer had plans to release Microsoft Band 3 and had disbanded the relevant research and development team.
Microsoft’s Last Responsibility
In terms of hardware, Microsoft Band is dead, but as its cloud service carrier, Microsoft Health has maintained its support for users, while Microsoft Band APP, which is used to connect to Microsoft, continues to be available for download in Microsoft’s own mobile application store and iOS & Android platform.
So far, this support has lasted for more than two years.
Of course, at the strategic level, Microsoft has already abandoned Microsoft Band, and the related services and maintenance work obviously need some cost. In this case, it is understandable that Microsoft chose to shut down its Microsoft Health service after more than two years.
However, even after the closure announcement has been issued, Microsoft still offers follow-up solutions on its official website:
A data export tool has been developed. Users can export data before May 31, 2019.
It was announced that all data would be deleted on May 31, 2019. Give a tutorial to tell users how to delete personal data on mobile app and Microsoft Band.
Users can still use Microsoft Band devices to do some local work, such as checking daily health information, recording exercise and sleep data, setting alarms, but cloud and mobile app services will not be available.
If users own a Microsoft Band that is still under warranty, or actively use Microsoft Band from December 1, 2018 to March 1, 2019 and upload data to Microsoft Health Dashboard, they will be entitled to a refund from Microsoft, of which Band 1 refunds $79.99 and Band 2 refunds $175, which must be in 201. Request by August 30, 9 years.
From the above content, Lei Feng thinks that the solution given by Microsoft can be said to be very responsible. In the comments of foreign media netizens, some netizens expressed their understanding and praise of Microsoft’s aftermath. Of course, some loyal Microsoft fans thought that Microsoft should not abandon users on products over and over again. For example, a netizen named mitchbomcanhao said that Microsoft had abandoned Windows Phone, Windows RT, Groove Music, Kinect and other services he purchased. There is a deep sense of resentment.
However, as far as Microsoft’s overall strategy is concerned, it is only a matter of time before Microsoft Band’s tail is completely thrown off. In fact, because in the past few years, Microsoft has steadily abandoned the relevant business for ordinary consumers, but more and more.
